How Women get stereotyped in media? by Valeria Carrillo

Women in media get stereotyped in media all the time. Have you ever just watched a commercial or an advertisement and thought, “wow she is so pretty, I want to have that nice boy/skin.” I admit, I have idolizing the way a model looks, so flawless and perfect. But have you ever stopped and wondered, why is it that I want to be like someone else and not be happy with how I am? Well media plays a big role in how women view themselves and how even how society views them. Advertisements and media puts a wrong image of women, making models look unreal.
The Dove soap threw a big campaign called “The Dove Campaignfor real Beauty" where, there are regular ladies posing for the picture. No, they are not models or supper skinny and flawless likes other advertisements. The campaign was made to show women that there is nothing wrong with being how they are. Advertsements are done so that women can feel insecrue and feel more secure by buying products, so that the company makes capital.Media should not play a role in how women are suppose to look like or even act. There are many commercials that stereotype women in magazines, television and even movies. Some of the commercials put out of house goods, the women usually plays the role of doing laundry and cleaning and taking the kids for lessons and the typical mini van. The movies also play a big role in stereotyping women, they are usually set as object for men, making them like trophies or even sometimes downgrading them with violence. Because of media women have health issues. Some of the issues are bulimia, anorexia and even psychological problems. Media not only affects women but also men because men get ideas of how a women is suppose to look like and act, but reality is different. Men also see women as object because of the influence of advertisements. There are now many campaigns that are helping women feel confident and comfortable with themselves. I think that media should be more careful on the way they do advertisement because it influences society. Women should not suffer and feel less because of how media depicts them. Women should learn to be confident and happy with how they look and how they are. Media should not tell women how to act or be in society and set a standard.
