Mission Abort

There are two groups separated by their views on abortion, pro-life and pro-choice. Advocates of pro-life believe that the embryo or fetus has the right to live no matter the consequences.  Supporters of pro-choice believe that the surrogate has the right to decide whether or not she would like to go through with an abortion whatever her reasoning may be.  Sady Doyle, the author of the article “Abortion Isn’t a Necessary Evil. It’s Great”, states the important statistic factors that should be recognized by the pro-life group. Sarah, author of the blog “Misconceptions About Abortion”, explains how some of the most common pro-life clichés are incorrect.  Will everyone ever be able to agree that abortion can be considered a good thing?

Can you imagine how different our world would be if men got pregnant?

A few of the most harmful health risks can occur during any of the nine months of carrying the child. A very upsetting example of this is one Doyle shared, “Michelle Lee, whose story Pollitt cites in her book, required a hearttransplant, which she could not receive while she stayed pregnant. Yet doctors at Louisiana State Medical Center denied her the necessary abortion, and therefore also the transplant, because the hospital rules stated that the risk of death from her pregnancy had to be greater than 50 percent before they could abort.” Supporters of pro-life would probably agree with the doctor’s reasoning because they believe abortions are far more dangerous than childbirth, when in fact risks from childbirth is about 13 times that for early abortion.  The overall abortion complication rate is extremely low, about 25 times lower than for childbirth.

Abortions can also help a family who may be experiencing some financial issues.  Continuing with the pregnancy comes with an expensive lifestyle change.   Raising a child is expensive! Besides providing food and shelter for the baby you'd also need to pay for school, clothes, insurance, and so much extra paraphernalia you won't know where your money went!

Let's say that a fetus was born with anencephaly ( lack of upper brain and skull), which is not survivable, would you want the fetus to have a slow painful death or be aborted before the fetus' pain receptors are produced?  Think about it.  Along with saving the embryo the physical pain an abortion will also save the mother the emotional pain.  The longer the embryo lives in the womb the more attached the mother might become; therefore, making it harder to watch the baby pass away.
The last major reason for an abortion is on the matter of rape.  Women who decide to keep their baby have a higher chance of falling into depression if the child resembles any  significant qualities from the rapist.  One pro-life belief is that, "Most unwanted pregnancies become wanted children.  Women who have abortions regret their mistake later", which may lead to depression anyway.  Sarah argues against that quote stating that, "Many unwanted babies are abused and/or neglected, and suffer lifelong developmental and social problems.  Many women make mistakes in having babies they don't want and can't love or care for.  A few women may come to regret their abortion, but this should not be a reason to deny choice to all women." Unless you are able to help all those abused children,  should women not have the choice?  No woman should be forced to raise a child of rape.

Including all the financial, health/physical, and emotional issues, there is always a possibility that continuing an unwanted pregnancy can cause more issues than  the termination of the fetus.  Although there are still many negative attitudes towards women having the right to an abortion, the age of pro-choice will continue to make an impact to eventually give all women more rights to make an informed decision on the discontinuation of their pregnancy.
